Why choose a color camera for astrophotography?
A color camera, also known as One Shot Color (OSC) called, is for many astrophotographers the most efficient way to capture deep-sky objects. Unlike monochrome cameras, which require separate red, green, and blue filters, an OSC sensor directly records all colors in a single exposure. This is made possible by the Bayer filter placed over the sensor.
Efficiency in practice
The biggest advantage of a color camera is the time savings, both during shooting and in post-processing. You don't have to control a filter wheel, and you don't lose time refocusing between different color filters. This makes color cameras extremely suitable for shorter nights or for photographers who work mobile and want to limit their setup time.
Modern sensor technology
The current generation of CMOS color cameras has undergone tremendous development. Thanks to techniques such as back-illumination With extremely low read noise, these cameras approach the performance of monochrome systems for many general applications. Especially with bright nebulae and galaxies, modern color sensors provide directly usable data with a natural color balance.
Use of duo-narrowband filters
Although a color camera captures broadband light, these cameras can also be effectively used in light-polluted areas. By using special duo-narrowband filters (such as H-alpha and OIII combined), you can still use a color camera to capture specific emission nebulae with high contrast without switching to a full monochrome workflow.
The right choice for your telescope
When selecting a color camera, pixel size is a determining factor in the sharpness of your images. Proper matching to the focal length of your telescope will prevent stars from becoming blocky or losing detail.
