Lunt Solar Systems: the sun in H-alpha

Lunt from Arizona makes telescopes that look exclusively at the sun, specifically in one color: the H-alpha light of hydrogen. In it, you see what a regular solar filter does not show: prominences on the edge, filaments and plage on the surface, and all of that during the day. A Lunt is therefore the only telescope in our shop that you use on a sunny Sunday afternoon instead of at two in the morning.

The LS40THa is the entry-level model: 40 mm, compact, enough for prominences and large sunspot groups. The LS60MT and LS80MT are the all-rounders with more detail on the surface; the LS100MT and LS130MT are for those who also want to photograph the sun. The code behind the model (B500, B1200, B1800, B3400) is the blocking filter: the higher the number, the larger the sensor or eyepiece field that is fully illuminated. Visually, B600 or B1200 is sufficient; for a camera, you choose B1800 or B3400.

Expand: double-stack and separate block filters

With a double-stack module does the bandwidth become even narrower and the surface detail emerge much more strongly; it is the upgrade that most Lunt owners buy second. Standalone blocking filters like the B1200 in 2-inch star diagonal making an existing telescope ready for a larger eyepiece or camera. For calcium light, there is the Ca-K module.

Note: not an ordinary telescope

A Lunt H-alpha telescope is exclusively for the sun; you won't see anything with it at night. If you want to view the sun in ordinary light with your existing telescope, a front aperture solar filter is sufficient. All solar telescopes and filters: solar telescopes.

Is looking through a Lunt safe? Yes. The etalon and the blocking filter are designed to let only the H-alpha light through; it is the safest solar system available, provided you never use an eyepiece or camera without a blocking filter.

What is a standard? The optical filter that limits the bandwidth to a fraction of a nanometer. With the “tune” button, you set it precisely to the H-alpha line; slightly next to it, you can see the moving gas layers above the surface.
