ZWO ASI678MC: 8 megapixel planetary detail without Barlow

The ASI678MC brings high resolution to planet and moon photography: the Sony IMX678 sensor delivers 3840 x 2160 pixels (8.3 MP) with a pixel size of just 2.0 micrometers. This fine sampling means you'll no longer need a Barlow lens on many telescopes to achieve maximum detail.

Compared to its predecessor, the ASI178MC, the readout noise has significantly decreased, amplifier glow has completely disappeared, and sensitivity in the infrared has increased: three improvements that are immediately visible in your stacks.

Small pixels, big detail

Pixels of 2.0 micrometers already sample fine planetary details at modest focal ratios around f/10. This keeps the setup fast and exposures short, two prerequisites for successful lucky imaging.

With 47.5 frames per second at full resolution and 4K video format, the camera is also suitable for moon videos and real-time display.

High Gain Mode in infrared

High Gain Mode activates at a gain value of 182 or higher: merk less noise and greater dynamic range—precisely in the range where planetary photographers work.

The increased infrared sensitivity allows for IR recordings that reduce the influence of atmospheric turbulence. For solar imaging, always use: exclusively with a suitable solar filter.
