How does buying second-hand work at Telescoop.nl?
In this category you’ll find used telescopes and accessories that we have inspected in our own workshop. Many items come from returns. Each item is a specific example: you buy exactly what is stated in the description and in the photos. If an item is sold, it will disappear from the list. The selection therefore changes with what arrives.
How do you read the condition of an item?
There are four fixed points on each product page:
- State: our assessment of the item as a whole.
- Origin: where it came from, for example a return shipment.
- Reviewed: What we have checked, adjusted or tested.
- Use marks and deviations: scratches, damage or other deviations, with photos.
Below is a list of what comes standard with the product. If there is anything missing from a particular item, we’ll mention that in the description.
What should you look for in a used telescope?
Optics. A few spots of dust or a small scratch on a lens or mirror are hardly noticeable in the image. Mold on a lens or a dull, spotted mirror coating are noticeable, however. That reduces contrast, and repairing it is expensive or no longer possible.
Collimation. If a reflecting telescope produces a blurry image, the mirrors often do not align properly. That is not a defect. With a laser collimator Imagine adding it in a few minutes. How it works, you can read in our explanation about collimation.
Mounting and focusing. An assembly should run smoothly and without play, and the focus should focus sharply without stuttering. With a GoTo or smart telescope Test the motors, the power supply, and the handheld controller or app. Check if the app still supports the model.
Completeness. Compare what is included with the standard set, such as eyepieces, Lens, cables and power supply. Buying the parts separately quickly makes a cheap telescope expensive.
In our second-hand items, you can see under "Nagekeken" what we have checked for each item.
Second-hand or new?
Mirrors and lenses hardly wear out. A telescope that is well-maintained from a few years ago will show you the same quality as a new one. Therefore, a second-hand one is a good way to start with a smaller budget or to buy an accessory for less.
If you are looking for a specific model, or if you want to choose from the entire range, check the new telescopes and telescope accessories. You don't know which telescope suits you yet? Our Telescope Buying Guide for Beginners List the entry-level models.
Do you have warranty on a used telescope?
Yes. You have 30 days to change your mind, just like with a new product. You can read about how it works in our return and cancellation policy. In addition, the statutory warranty applies: the item must perform as you would expect of a second-hand item in the described condition. Wear and any deviations that we mention in advance are not covered by the warranty.
