How does renting a telescope from Telescoop.nl work?

Renting a telescope with us is very easy and can be arranged in under a minute:

• 1. Applications: Fill out the form with your telescope choice, rental period, and delivery preference. You are not committed to anything yet.
• 2. Payment: You will receive an invoice by email with the total amount within a few minutes. Once the payment has been received, your reservation is confirmed and we will block the telescope for your dates.
• 3. Received: We ensure that the telescope arrives well in time or is ready for you via your chosen method: by mail, by courier, or through our pickup location in Sneek.
• 4. Return: After the rental period, simply send the telescope back in its original packaging. The return label is already in the box, so you don't need to arrange anything yourself. Returning it in person or having it picked up by the courier is, of course, also possible.

During the application process, you choose how you want to receive the telescope:

• Ship by mail You will receive the telescope delivered securely, safely packaged and insured to your home. Afterwards, you simply send it back using the included return label.
• Courier delivery and pickup (Netherlands only): Our courier service will neatly deliver the telescope to your home or a location of your choice. At the end of the rental period, we will also pick it up from there. The perfect choice for anyone who wants complete peace of mind.
• Self collection and return: Do you live nearby or would you prefer to pick up the telescope yourself? You can do so free of charge by appointment at our location in Sneek.

If you decide to purchase a new telescope from us after the rental period, we will deduct the full rental price paid (excluding shipping costs) directly from the purchase price of your new telescope! Where is the best place to observe?

Although you can already see beautiful details of the moon and planets from a backyard, a telescope truly comes into its own under a dark sky. The Netherlands has several excellent locations with minimal light pollution, such as the Veluwe, Lauwersmeer National Park (Dark Sky Park), and the Wadden Islands. Conditions are often surprisingly good for viewing deep-sky objects like nebulae and galaxies at campsites outside the Randstad as well.

Rental Terms & Guidelines

These regulations describe the binding agreements and guidelines of our rental policy. By requesting a reservation and paying the corresponding invoice, you declare that you agree to these terms and conditions.

1. Reservation and payment

Following your request, you will receive an invoice by email with the total amount. Your reservation is confirmed once the invoice has been paid in full. The invoice must be paid before the shipping or pickup date; if payment is not made, the reservation will be canceled and the dates will become available again for other renters. We do not charge a deposit.

2. Rental period and extension

Extension of the rental period is only possible in consultation and subject to availability. Extensions must be requested and paid for prior to the original end date. Failure to return the equipment on time without written permission will result in a charge of twice the daily rate for each missed day, plus any claims for damages from subsequent renters.

3. Receipt inspection (Reporting obligation)

As a tenant, you are obliged to inspect the telescope and accessories immediately upon receipt (by mail or courier) for any defects or transport damage. Any imperfections must within 12 hours of receipt Must be reported in writing, accompanied by clear photos, via [email protected]. Reports submitted after this deadline or only after use cannot be accepted; in such cases, it will be assumed that the damage occurred during your rental period.

4. Damage, Loss, and Liability

Even without a deposit, as a tenant you remain liable for the rented equipment for the entire rental period, up to a maximum of its replacement value. The following applies:

• No cleaning, strictly forbidden: It is the tenant not You are permitted to clean, remove, or polish the optical elements (lenses and mirrors) yourself. This will cause irreparable scratches (coating damage). Costs for repairing or replacing optical components due to incorrect cleaning will be fully charged to the renter.
• Excluded from coverage: Damage due to negligence, accidental or impact damage, theft, loss, tampering/disassembly of parts, or use during adverse weather conditions (rain, storm, extreme humidity, sand/dust, or salty sea air) is the sole responsibility of the renter.
• Packaging The equipment must be packed exactly as it was upon receipt, using the original cases, custom foam, and protective caps. Damage resulting from careless or incorrect packing for return transport will be fully charged to the renter.

5. Cancellation and Amendment

Because the telescopes are specifically reserved for your dates and blocked for other customers, we have a strict cancellation policy.

• Cancellation up to 48 hours before the scheduled delivery date is free of charge; you will receive a full refund of the amount paid.
• If you cancel between 24 and 48 hours before delivery, we will charge 50% of the rental price.
• In case of cancellation within 24 hours of delivery, or failure to accept the package, the full rental fee will be due.

6. Privacy and GDPR

We process your personal data (such as address and payment details) exclusively for the administrative and logistical handling of the rental agreement in accordance with the GDPR. Data will only be shared with third parties when necessary for the execution (such as courier or parcel services). For more information, please refer to our privacy statement.

7. Terms and Conditions ‘Rent first, buy later’

If, at the end of the rental period, the renter proceeds to purchase a new, unused telescope through Telescoop.nl, they may qualify for the ‘Rent First, Then Buy’ program. The following conditions apply:

• Offsetting Only the net rent (the basic rental price of the telescope) will be deducted from the purchase price of the new telescope. Any transport or administration costs already incurred are excluded from this arrangement.
• Validity period The purchase of the new telescope should be completed by 14 calendar days after the official end of the rental period has been completed to claim the settlement. After that, the offer expires permanently.
• One-time character This offer is valid once per customer, per rental period, and is not transferable to third parties. The discount cannot be accumulated by combining multiple consecutive rental periods.
• Disclaimer The scheme only applies to the purchase of a complete telescope set and cannot be used for the separate purchase of accessories, eyepieces, or mounts, unless otherwise agreed in writing. The discount can never exceed the purchase price of the new product and will not be paid out in cash.
