Classic Dobson: the solid tube that does it all

A classic Dobson is a Newtonian reflector telescope in a closed tube on a wooden or steel altazimuth mount. No electronics, no folding mechanism, no compromises on the optics. Every euro goes into the mirror. That is why this is the category in which the Sky-Watcher Skyliner-200P Classic and the Skyliner-150P Classic have been among our best-selling telescopes for years.

Which opening do you choose?

• 150 mm (6 inch). The Skyliner-150P and the Omegon Advanced X 152/1200 They have a long brand focal length of 1,200 mm (f/8). This makes them forgiving with simple eyepieces and excellent for observing the Moon and planets. The tube and mount together weigh about 15 kg.
• 200 mm (8 inch). The format that we see as the best all-rounder. The Skyliner-200P, the Omegon Advanced X 203/1200 and the Bresser Messier 203/1200 Hexafoc show spiral arms in bright galaxies from a dark site. Count on over 20 kg in total, to be lifted in two parts.
• 254 to 304 mm (10 to 12 inches). The Omegon Advanced X 254/1250 and 304/1500 are for those who have a permanent spot in the garden or a storage shed next to the back door. Hose length 1.2 to 1.5 meters.

Why not a collapsible Dobson?

A closed tube keeps out stray light, is less prone to dewing, and holds its collimation longer. If you don't have a transportation problem, the classic Dobson is the better optical choice for the same money. If the telescope often has to go along in the car, then take a look at collapsible Dobsons.

Accessories that make the difference

Every Newton has a laser collimator required. For 200 mm and larger, we recommend a 2-inch moon filter (model 50%) and a wide-angle eyepiece of about 30 mm for a broad view. For the 8- and 10-inch models, a fabric-covered carrying bag from Oklop a wise purchase.
