Sky-Watcher Skyliner-250P Classic: the 10-inch light bucket

The Sky-Watcher Skyliner-250P Classic is a floor-mounted Dobsonian telescope with a 254 mm (10-inch) parabolic mirror and a focal length of 1200 mm (f/4.7). With 56% more light-gathering power than the 200P, this is the step that takes faint deep-sky objects from “observable” to “impressive.” The RAQ coating reflects up to 94% of the captured light. For visual observers, this offers one of the best price-to-performance ratios in our entire Dobson assortment.

What do you see through the Skyliner 250P?

At this magnification, deep-sky objects become the main course. Galaxies reveal structure instead of just a faint smudge, planetary nebulae show hints of color, and globular clusters fill the field of view with resolved stars. Planets benefit just as much: Jupiter at 200x is a lively cloudscape, and you can practically walk through the craters on the Moon. The darker your sky, the greater the difference compared to smaller apertures; this telescope amply rewards a trip to a dark sky site.

Large, but cleverly divided

Tube and rockerbox can be transported separately, which makes this 10-inch surprisingly portable. The 2-inch Crayford focuser focuses without play, and the renewed accessory set with two 70-degree Wide Angle eyepieces, 9×50 finder, and smartphone adapter makes it complete from the very first evening.

This is how to get the most out of this telescope

  • Be honest about size and weight. Measure your storage space and the path to the outside before you order. The telescope that stays outside always wins over the telescope that stays inside, and that's doubly true at this size.
  • Allow one hour for cooling. For the large mirror, especially in winter.
  • Collimation is important at f/4.7. Check after each move; our guide to collimation makes it routine.
  • Seek the darkness. This opening gathers so much light that light pollution also counts more; from a dark location, the difference is spectacular.
  • For planets: a 6 mm planetary eyepiece performs 200x; on peak nights, this mirror can handle even more, but that's where it starts to render.

For whom yes and for whom no

Hello For the serious visual observer wanting maximum deep-sky performance without electronics, and the advanced beginner who knows they'll keep looking and wants to get it right from the start.

Not Anyone who doubts the size and weight is almost always better off with the Skyliner-200P Classic: 90%—all the experience in a more compact package. Long-exposure astrophotography is part of the smart telescopes; quick moon photos with the included smartphone adapter are actually a nice bonus of this large optics.

Featured accessories

These accessories add the most after purchase:

  • Moon Filter 13%: With this mirror size, the moon is blindingly bright. The Omegon Moon Filter 13% (1.25 inches) dims the light and increases the contrast. More explanation is in our Moon filter guide.
  • A 6mm planetary eyepiece: the Sky-Watcher 6mm Planetary UWA Eyepiece does this telescope provide 200x magnification for more detail on Jupiter and Saturn? If you want to go one step further, there is also the 5 mm version (240x).
  • Cheshire eyepiece the Sky-Watcher Cheshire Eyepiece Aligning the mirrors is more accurate than the included tools.
  • Carrier bag protects the optics on the way to a dark spot. View the carrier bags and choose the size that fits this model.
