An equatorial mount only performs when balanced: the counterweight compensates for the weight of the telescope and accessories, allowing the motors to run lightly and evenly. Too little counterweight means wear, tracking errors, and vibrations.
The combination of a heavy and a light weight allows for fine-tuning: the heavy weight carries the telescope, the light weight compensates for a camera, zenith mirror, or heavy eyepiece. This is precisely the flexibility a lightweight mount like the EQ3-2 needs.
