Sky-Watcher SkyMax-180 PRO HEQ5 Pro: The Compromise-Free Planet Scope
The top model of the Maksutov line: the 180/2700mm SkyMax-180 PRO (f/15) on the HEQ5 Pro SynScan, the heaviest mount in this series. For the discerning observer who makes no compromises: maximum resolution, maximum stability, and automatic control of over 42,800 objects.

What do you see through the SkyMax-180 PRO?
The 180 PRO is the series' planetary cannon. At a 2700mm focal length, the included 10mm eyepiece already provides 270x magnification: detail levels on Jupiter and Saturn normally only seen in photos, provided the sky cooperates. The moon becomes an endless collection of ridges, crater chains, and mountain shadows. Double stars are its second specialty: the high resolution of the 180mm splits close pairs that smaller telescopes keep together.
HEQ5 Pro: Oversized capacity that you see in the image
The HEQ5 Pro mount carries the 52 cm tube with plenty of reserve. This directly translates into viewing comfort: at 270x magnification, vibrations almost immediately dampen, and the image remains stable when focusing. Those who later want to try lunar and planetary photography have the right foundation with this mount.
This is how to get the most out of this telescope
- Give the thick correcting lens plenty of time to cool down. 45 to 60 minutes with these larger lenses. A Maksutov rewards patience with a silent image.
- Protect against dew The front meniscus lens fogs up faster than a mirror. A dew shield is the most useful first upgrade for this type.
- Align the mount to Polaris: For visual use, roughly north and the correct pole height are sufficient; after that, you can follow objects effortlessly.
- Use a power tank: The SynScan mount runs on 12V and cold nights drain battery capacity.
- Magnification: 108x and 270x are in the box; on nights with top seeing conditions, this optics can handle even a bit more.
- Plan with the moon: Around the first quarter you see the most detail along the terminator. Our lunar calendar have the best nights in a row.
For whom yes and for whom no
Hello The moon and planet specialist, double star enthusiast, and urban observer: bright targets don't care much about light pollution. Unsure about the type? Our Telescope Buying Guide for Beginners List the considerations.
Not For wide deep-sky fields, the field of view of this long focal length is too narrow. If budget is the deciding factor, the EQ5 Pro version offers the same optics with slightly less capacity. Deep-sky photography with long exposures belongs to the smart telescopes or a bright Newtonian; moon and planetary shots are precisely a specialty of this optics.
Featured accessories
These accessories add the most after purchase:
- Moon Filter 13%: with this opening, the moon is dazzlingly bright. The Omegon Moon Filter 13% (1.25 inches) dims the light and increases the contrast. More explanation in our Moon filter guide.
- Smartphone adapter: Maksutov telescopes, with their long focal length, are particularly good for impressive moon photos taken with a phone. The Sky-Watcher SmartPhoto+ adapter comes with a special 20 mm photo eyepiece.
- Carrier bag There is a perfectly fitting Maksutov 180 bag and a bag for the tripod. Take a look carrier bags.
