Omegon N 114/900 EQ-1: The classic among beginner telescopes

The Omegon N 114/900 EQ-1 has been the standard recipe for a first serious telescope for decades: 114 mm aperture, 900 mm focal length (f/7.9), and an equatorial mount. The mirror captures over 2.5 times more light than a 70 mm refractor: the craters of the Moon, the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, and the first nebulae and star clusters come alive.

A Newtonian reflector works with mirrors instead of lenses: large aperture for little money and a color-aberration-free image. Occasional collimation (aligning mirrors) is part of it; that can be done in a few minutes.

36x to 180x with the included kit

With the 25mm and 10mm eyepieces, you view at 36x and 90x. The 2x Barlow doubles this to 72x and 180x; this allows you to immediately utilize the full practical range of this aperture.

The long focal length of f/7.9 is forgiving: the image remains sharp and steady, even with simple eyepieces.

Using a dial

The equatorial EQ-1 compensates for the Earth's rotation via an axis. This keeps Jupiter in view while your family watches. The finderscope helps with aiming.
