This 2.6 kg steel counterweight balances a larger telescope or camera on an equatorial mount. You slide it onto the counterweight bar and secure the fixing screw.

An assembly that is out of balance puts the drive system under strain one-sidedly. This leads to uneven tracking and, in the long run, to wear and tear. Therefore, adding weight is no luxury once you mount a heavier tube or additional accessories.
