Omegon 76/900 Newtonian EQ-2: long focal length, learning to track smoothly

The Omegon 76/900 Newton EQ-2 is a classic beginner's telescope: 76 mm aperture with a long focal length of 900 mm (f/11.8) on an EQ-2 equatorial mount. The long focal length keeps the image stable and makes high magnifications easy; the EQ-2 teaches you how to track objects with a control knob.

A Newtonian reflector works with mirrors instead of lenses: large aperture for little money and a color-aberration-free image. Occasional collimation (aligning mirrors) is part of it; that can be done in a few minutes.

The EQ-2 mount of the Omegon 76/900

EQ-2 with slow motion controls on two axes

The EQ-2 is slightly more stable than the EQ-1, which is used on many entry-level models. Two fine-motion axes allow you to compensate for the Earth’s rotation, so your target stays in view while you’re observing.

Eyepieces of the Omegon 76/900 Newtonian

36x and 138x with the included eyepieces

The 25 mm eyepiece gives 36x for wide-field views and the Moon; the 6.5 mm eyepiece immediately delivers 138x, right below the practical maximum for this aperture. With that, you can see Saturn's rings and Jupiter's cloud belts without having to buy anything extra.

The 76 mm mirror collects about 118 times more light than the naked eye.

Omegon 76/900 red dot finder

Aiming with the red dot finder

The red dot projects a red dot onto the sky: aim with both eyes open, dot on your target, look.

Featured accessories

The Omegon laser collimator (44.90 euros) keeps the mirrors aligned; every Newtonian should have one in the drawer. An Omegon Premium 1.25-inch moon filter (19.90 euros) dims the bright moonlight, and the Omegon 7-21 mm zoom eyepiece (69 euros) seamlessly fills the gap between the two included magnifications (43x to 129x).

Never look at the sun through a telescope without a certified solar filter: this will cause permanent eye damage within a second.

For whom yes, for whom no

Good for: beginners who want to quietly learn to observe and track planets on a solid mount. Not for: those who want to see more; the N 114/900 EQ-1 captures over twice as much light for forty euros more. Compare via the Choice assistant. Meer Omegon stands on the merk page.
