Twelve inches that fit in the trunk

The Explore Scientific Dobson 305/1525 Ultra Light Gen II is designed for serious visual observers. The 305 mm primary mirror captures 44 percent more light than the 254 mm model: fainter nebulae, galaxies, and globular clusters become significantly more visible.

Gen II: stiffer, lighter, faster to assemble

The all-metal truss construction is stiffer and lighter than classic wooden Dobsons. The modular design assembles in minutes and packs away just as quickly: the secondary mirror cage, truss tubes, and altitude wheels all fit inside the aluminum rocker box. The parabolic BK7 mirror rests in a modern 9-point cell with front collimation, and two fans quickly bring it to ambient temperature.

Be honest about the size

Twelve inches is a commitment: expect around 25 kg total and a permanent spot in the car. If you're undecided between the 254 and the 305, and the telescope will mostly be in the garden, then the 254 is the more manageable all-rounder. If you regularly drive to dark skies, the extra aperture will pay off immediately. The practical working magnification is around 250x to 350x.

In the box

  • Optical tube 305/1525 with aluminum truss structure Gen II
  • Parabolic BK7 primary mirror in 9-point cell
  • Two built-in mirror fans
  • Aluminum rocker box
  • Rack-and-pinion focuser

For whom yes, for whom no

For: experienced visual observers who want maximum deep-sky performance in a portable package. Not for: those who primarily observe from a backyard in the city; light pollution limits what this aperture can offer, and the 254 is the wiser choice.
