The planet specialist of the SLT line
The Celestron NexStar 127 SLT is built for razor-sharp planetary work. The 127 mm Maksutov-Cassegrain with a 1500 mm focal length (f/11.8) delivers the high contrast this optical design is known for, in a closed tube that keeps out dust and air turbulence. The computer-controlled SLT mount automatically finds and tracks the Moon, planets, and bright deep-sky objects.
Maksutov optics: high contrast at high magnification
The long focal length makes high magnification easy: with the 25 mm and 9 mm eyepieces, you view at 60x and 167x. Realistically usable is up to about 254x, precisely the working range for Jupiter's cloud belts, Saturn's rings, and Mars' polar ice caps. Stars remain sharp and point-like all the way to the edge of the image.
SkyAlign: no star knowledge required
Point the telescope at three random bright celestial bodies, enter the time and location, and the computer automatically recognizes the sky. The multilingual hand controller then navigates you through more than 4,000 objects, with automatic tracking. The mount runs on AA batteries; an external power supply is the wise addition for longer sessions.
For whom yes, for whom no
Pros: the observer who mainly wants to see the Moon and planets with maximum contrast, in a compact and portable package. Cons: those looking for sprawling nebulae and star fields; the narrow field of view of the long focal length is not made for that. Choose the NexStar 130 SLT with its fast f/5 mirror instead.
