Sky-Watcher Mercury-607: the classic refractor telescope

The Sky-Watcher Mercury-607 is a 60/700 mm (f/11.7) achromatic refractor on an AZ-2 altazimuth mount. The long, slow lens provides a calm and surprisingly sharp image of the moon and planets, and the erecting diagonal also makes it a nature viewer during the day. Complete with two eyepieces and a Barlow lens.

What do you see through this telescope?

The moon is the main stage: craters, mountain ranges, and the play of shadow along the terminator are different every night. Jupiter shows its four large moons, Saturn reveals its rings, and Venus its phases. Bright star clusters like the Pleiades round out the program. Don't expect faint nebulae: those require more aperture, and that's appropriate for this price point.

Why a long lens works well

At f/11.7, color aberrations are minimal and simple eyepieces are at their best: the image remains calm and high-contrast, exactly what the moon and planets require. No cooling time, no mirror alignment: a refractor is the most carefree start there is.

This is how to get the most out of this telescope

• Start with the lowest power eyepiece (the largest number): first find, then enlarge.
• Magnification: 25 mm gives 28x, 10 mm gives 70x; the Barlow works best in combination with the 25 mm eyepiece (56x).
• Never look directly at the sun without protection., not even for a moment: only with a certified solar filter on the front.
