Omegon Flatfield ED 5 mm Eyepiece 60° (1.25 inch): flat field of view with ED glass for planets

The Omegon Flatfield ED 5 mm is a planetary eyepiece with six lens elements, an ED element, and a flat 60-degree field of view. Details on the moon and planets remain sharp right to the edge, without the distortion that simple eyepieces show there.

The large eyepiece provides a comfortable, natural view without black shadows, even when your eye is not exactly on the axis.

ED glass for pure colors

The ED lens element corrects color errors, so bright edges like the moon terminator stay sharp instead of bleeding purple. The multi-layer coating on all air-glass surfaces keeps the contrast high.

Flat field of view of 60 degrees

With a 60-degree field of view, this eyepiece belongs to the wide-angle class: it offers about 20 percent more field of view than a Plössl. Thanks to its field correction, the entire field is truly usable, right up to the edge.

What can you see with a 5 mm lens?

On a 150/750 Newtonian, 5 mm provides a magnification of 150x; on a telescope with a 1000 mm focal length, it provides a magnification of 200x. Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s cloud bands, and fine lunar details are the obvious targets.

Keep to the rule of thumb of a maximum of 2x the aperture in millimeters for a sharp image.

The Flatfield ED series is also available in longer brand focal lengths for medium magnification and wide-field viewing. An Omegon Barlow lens further extends the range; a lunar filter is rarely needed with this short brand focal length.
