Sky-Watcher Skyliner-150P Classic: The forgiving classic

The Sky-Watcher Skyliner-150P Classic is a Dobsonian floor model with a 153mm (6-inch) parabolic mirror and a long focal length of 1200mm (f/8). This slow f-ratio is its secret weapon: the image is calm and contrast-rich, collimation is forgiving, and even simple eyepieces perform well with it. This is the telescope that in our Dobson assortment For years, it has been recommended to those who want tight planet images without hassle.

What do you see through the Skyliner 150P?

This is a planet and moon specialist. Jupiter shows cloud bands and, under good conditions, the Great Red Spot. Saturn displays its rings, with the Cassini Division visible on exceptional nights. The Moon, at 96x magnification, offers a landscape that feels like flying over it. It also handles deep-sky objects: globular clusters, the Orion Nebula, and bright galaxies are well within reach, although the field of view is narrower than with faster models like the Heritage due to the long focal length.

Looks big, but portable

The tube (6 kg) and wooden rocker box (12 kg) separate in a flash, allowing the telescope to fit in the back seat or trunk in two parts. The 2-inch rack-and-pinion focuser with all-metal gears accepts both 2-inch and 1.25-inch eyepieces via the included adapter with scratch-free brass compression ring.

This is how to get the most out of this telescope

  • Take advantage of f/8. Collimation is needed less often and less precisely than with fast mirrors. A check after transport is still wise; see our guide on collimation.
  • Give the mirror 30 to 45 minutes of cooling time outside for the sharpest image.
  • Think about the storage. The tube is just over a meter long; measure your cabinet or corner before it arrives.
  • Align the 6x30 finder during the day on a distant object; the crosshairs make precise aiming easy afterward.
  • For maximum planet detail: a 6 mm planetary eyepiece provides 200x, exactly what this f/8 optic can handle on good nights.

For whom yes and for whom no

Hello beginners and advanced users who primarily observe the moon and planets, those who prefer a steady and high-contrast image over a wide field of view, and those looking for a durable, lifelong telescope. Telescope Buying Guide for Beginners Help with the choice.

Not for the widest deep-sky fields and maximum light output per euro, the Skyliner-200P Classic the known next step. Long exposures are not for a manual Dobsonian; for that, the smart telescopes. Quick moon and planet photos with the included smartphone adapter actually work surprisingly well and are a fun start.
