Telrad Red Dot Finder with Base: the classic among finders

The Telrad has been the standard among reflex sights for decades, and for good reason. Instead of peering through a small finder tube, you look at the sky with both eyes open, onto which the Telrad projects three red concentric circles.

The circles of 0.5, 2, and 4 degrees correspond to fixed distances in the sky. Star charts and apps show the same Telrad circles, allowing you to find an object simply by superimposing the chart image onto the real sky.

Why a reflex finder

An optical finder magnifies and inverts the image, which makes orientation difficult. The Telrad does not magnify anything: what you see is the sky itself, with the circles as a sighting guide. Especially on Dobsons, that is the fastest way to navigate, even for beginners.

Complete with base

You stick the included base onto the tube; the Telrad clicks into it and can be aligned precisely using two adjustment screws. Additional bases are available separately, allowing one Telrad to serve multiple telescopes. The illumination is dimmable and operates on two AA batteries.

Featured accessories

Combine the Telrad with a star chart or planetarium app that shows Telrad circles: together they form the complete navigation system for any manual telescope.

For whom yes and for whom no

  • ✓ Dobson and Newton owners who want to navigate quickly and intuitively
  • ✓ Beginners who find the mirror image of an optical viewfinder confusing
  • ✗ Very small telescopes: the Telrad is chunky, check if the tube can support the size
