TeleVue Plössl 55mm : 50° 2″ Oculair: klassiek Ploessl-oculair van TeleVue
The TeleVue Ploessl 55mm is the flagship 2-inch in the series, with a 46mm field stop at maximum insertion and an eye relief of approximately 38mm.
It's the eyepiece for the lowest magnification: the same true field of view as the Panoptic 41mm, at a lower price and with even more eye relief.

The TeleVue Ploessl design
Four lenses in two groups are all a good Ploessl needs. Because there are few glass surfaces, transmission remains high and contrast is maximized: precisely the characteristics that matter for planetary and lunar observation.
TeleVue T-type optics brought the design to the current level in the seventies, with tight manufacturing tolerances, multiple coatings, and blackened lens edges. You can see the difference compared to a standard supplied eyepiece right at the edge of the field.
The lowest magnification that allows 2 inches
On an f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain, the 55 mm provides an exit pupil of 5.5 mm and the largest possible field of view, precisely what this eyepiece is designed for. On a fast Newton, that same pupil becomes larger than the eye can utilize, and light is lost.
The height-adjustable eyecup helps to stably position the eye at the generous distance from the lens.
In your telescope
In a telescope with a 1200 mm focal length, this eyepiece delivers approximately 22x with a true field of view of about 2.20 degrees. For your own telescope: true field of view = 57.3 x field stop divided by the telescope's focal length.
The effective field stop of this model is 46.0 mm.
Featured accessories
A TeleVue 2x or 3x Barlow lens doubles or triples the magnification of any Ploessl eyepiece without any loss of quality; two Ploessl eyepieces plus a Barlow lens thus cover four magnification levels. Models 25 mm and larger also accept the Dioptrx astigmatism corrector.
For whom yes and for whom no
- ✓ Slow telescopes from about f/7
- The maximum field at the lowest price
- ✓ eyeglass wearers with the longest interpupillary distance in the series
- ✗ Fast telescopes, the exit pupil is too large
- Anyone looking for a wide apparent field of view, check out the Panoptic 41 mm.
