Sky-Watcher Heritage-76: The entry-level Dobson that fits anywhere

The Sky-Watcher Heritage-76 is a tabletop Dobsonian with a 76mm mirror and a focal length of 300mm. What do you see through the Heritage 76?

The Moon is the showstopper: craters, maria, and the terminator are sharply visible. Jupiter appears as a disc with its four bright moons alongside it, and Saturn as a bright dot recognizable by its rings. Under a dark sky, you can also observe bright star clusters like the Pleiades. Be honest with yourself and your child: fine planetary details like cloud bands are for larger models. What this little telescope does is show that it's truly possible, and that's exactly what a first telescope should do.

Set, aim, look

The wooden table-Dobson mount rotates smoothly in all directions. You place it on a table or windowsill, aim with the finder, and look. The 1.25-inch focuser accepts almost any standard eyepiece, so upgrading is always possible later. Due to its low weight, this is also a great travel telescope for camping or a dark vacation destination.

This is how to get the most out of this telescope

• Align the finder during the day on a distant object such as a church tower. In the evening, you can find the moon and planets directly.
• Start at the moon. Around the first quarter, you see the most craters along the terminator. Our Moon filter guide explains when a filter is useful.
• Use the 10mm eyepiece (30x) for the moon and the 25mm eyepiece (12x) to find objects and explore star fields.
• Don't expect miracles above 50x to 60x. That's the practical limit for a 76 mm mirror, no matter what department store telescopes promise.
