Every time you have to take the camera apart to install a different filter, it takes time, and then the orientation of your image is no longer correct. A filter tray for astrophotography solves that problem. The filter is housed inside the tray itself: you take the tray out, place another filter, and slide it back while the camera stays in place.

The tray is located between the telescope and the camera, often behind a flattener for a flat image field or a reducer. To connect parts with different thread diameters, you use, for example a transition from T2 to M48.

A filter holder also takes up space in your image chain. When calculating the backfocus, take that into account and check which thread you need on both sides. Also check whether the filter size you use fits in this holder, because the choice of filters depends on that.
