On safari, a pair of binoculars is just as important as your camera. Animals are often further away than you think, and with a good pair of binoculars you can see the difference between a speck of grass and a leopard lying asleep.
Which binoculars do you take on a safari?
For most travelers, an 8×42 is the best choice: a wide, clear image that is also easy to follow from a moving or shaking car, and enough light for early morning and dusk when the animals are most active. If you are primarily looking at open plains, a 10×42 will bring more detail to your view. If you want to travel as light as possible, choose an 8×32.
Why waterproof and gas-filled?
Dust, heat, and the transition from a cool car to humid outdoor air are all tough on a binoculars. A waterproof, gas-filled binoculars (often labeled with IPX7) keeps dust out and doesn’t fog up from the inside. A rubberized coating provides grip and absorbs shocks.
If you’re traveling as a couple, it’s better to bring two viewers along: the most beautiful moments often last only a few seconds. Most safari watchers are also excellent binoculars for birds.
