Omegon Camera veLOX 287 M Mono: monochrome global shutter camera for Sun and planets

The monochrome version of the veLOX 287 combines 6.9-micrometer pixels with a global shutter and 520 frames per second. For solar photography in H-alpha, that is a sought-after combination: high light per pixel, no color filter array, and enough speed to freeze the seeing.

Without a color matrix, each pixel captures the full spectrum. You decide for yourself with filters which part you capture.

Sensor and speed

The Sony IMX287 in monochrome version measures 5.0 by 3.7 mm and has 728 x 544 pixels of 6.9 micrometers. The readout is done at 12 bit via USB 3.0.

The global shutter reads out all pixels simultaneously. At high frame rates, the image geometry therefore remains correct.

Solar photography and narrowband

Behind an H-alpha solar telescope, this camera captures prominences and surface detail. The large pixels keep the exposure time short.

For white-light images of the Sun, you use a safe full-aperture filter for the telescope.

Autoguiding with an ST4 port

The camera has a built-in ST4 port. You connect it directly to the autoguider port on your mount to correct for tracking during long exposures. The camera can also be used as an autoguider, especially for long brand points.

PHD2 recognizes the camera natively. It also works with N.I.N.A., SharpCap, and similar programs via the ASCOM and INDI drivers.

Connect to your telescope

The housing has the shape and diameter of a 1.25-inch eyepiece. So you can slide the camera into almost any focuser. The flange distance is 12.5 mm; with the included extension tube, it becomes 17.5 mm.

C and CS mount threads, with an anti-reflective window instead of a blocking filter. Ultraviolet and infrared light therefore reach the sensor.

Included

  • Camera in anodized aluminum housing
  • Adapter with 1.25 inch filter thread (C-mount to M28.5)
  • Extension piece with flange distance 17.5 mm
  • USB cable
  • ST4 cable

Featured accessories

A suitable narrowband filter or an H-alpha solar telescope determines the result. A Barlow lens brings the image scale to the right size.

For whom yes and for whom no

  • ✓ Solar photography in H-alpha
  • ✓ Planetary images at long brand focal length
  • ✓ For those who want to determine the transmission curve themselves
  • ✗ Wide-angle field work, the image field is small
  • ✗ Who wants to take color photographs without filters
