ZWO IR Pass Filter 1.25 inch: Sharper Planetary Details Through Infrared
This IR pass filter does the opposite of a block filter: it blocks all visible light and allows only infrared light with wavelengths above 850 nm to pass through. Because infrared light is much less affected by atmospheric turbulence, images of the Moon and planets are noticeably smoother and sharper, especially in moderate seeing conditions or when a planet is low in the sky.
Good to know: With many color cameras, the Bayer color layer is virtually transparent above 850 nm. With this filter, you can therefore effectively use a color camera as a full-resolution monochrome camera. To do this, set the white balance (WB_R and WB_B) to 50.
What you capture with it
- Sharper images of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the Moon
- Planet detail in poor seeing or low altitude
- Shooting in twilight: infrared makes the background sky darker
Compatibility
Fits 1.25 inch focusers and filter wheels. Only suitable for cameras sensitive to infrared, such as the ASI174MM, ASI462MM, and ASI585MM. Not suitable for visual observation.
