ZWO ASI 183MM Mono: the affordable entry into mono with 20 megapixels

The ASI183MM opens the door to monochrome astrophotography without a major investment. The Sony IMX183 sensor, without a Bayer filter array, delivers its full 20.18 megapixels to each filter channel, with a quantum efficiency of 84% and fine pixels measuring 2.4 micrometers.

In combination with a filter wheel and LRGB or narrowband filters, you build color images with a sharpness that color sensors of this size cannot achieve. For the moon and planets, the 19 fps at full resolution and higher speeds with ROI crops provide plenty of material for stacking.

Mono means more signal

Without a color matrix, each pixel captures the full spectrum of the chosen filter. Especially in narrowband astrophotography (H-alpha, OIII, SII), this saves a factor in exposure time compared to a color camera.

The 1.25-inch filters fit this sensor format without vignetting: the budget-friendly route to a complete mono set.

Honest advice about the sensor

Like the color version, the IMX183 shows amplifier glow during long exposures; dark frames calibrate that completely away. For glow-free operation without that step, the ASI585MM is the modern alternative.

The ST-4 port also makes the camera usable as a sensitive guider.
