Sky-Watcher Heritage-90 Virtuoso: The Compact Planetary Specialist
The Sky-Watcher Heritage-90 Cass is a Maksutov-Cassegrain with a 90 mm aperture and a long focal length of 1250 mm (f/13.9) on the Virtuoso tracking mount. This combination is made for one thing: sharp, high-contrast images of the moon, planets, and double stars in a tube weighing just 1.5 kg. The closed tube is also virtually maintenance-free: collimation is rarely needed.

What do you see through the Heritage 90 Cass?
The Moon is the main stage: craters, mountain ranges, and rilles are razor-sharp at 125x. Jupiter displays its cloud bands, Saturn its rings, and Venus its phases. This optics also clearly splits double stars. Deep-sky objects such as the Orion Nebula and the Pleiades are visible, but the narrow field of view of 1250 mm makes extensive nebulae less suitable: for those, shorter Heritage-Newtonian telescopes like the Heritage-130P better suited.
Virtuoso: Auto-tracking, expandable to GoTo
Once aimed, the mount holds the object with multiple tracking speeds. Freedom Find allows manual movement without losing alignment, and those who wish can later connect a SynScan GoTo hand controller for automatic searching of over 40,000 objects. The included 90-degree star diagonal provides a comfortable viewing angle, even for terrestrial observations like birds.
This is how to get the most out of this telescope
- Allow the sealed tube additional cooling time: A Maksutov telescope needs 30 to 45 minutes to achieve a stable image due to its thick corrector lens.
- Use the moon as a starting point: At this focal length, every lunar detail is a treat. Around the first quarter, you see the most; our Moon filter guide explains which filter enhances viewing comfort.
- Is the power on? The stepper motor runs on 12V; a power bank or power tank will keep the evening going.
- Stay under 180x: that is the practical limit of a 90 mm aperture. The included 10 mm eyepiece (125x) is already close to the optimum.
For whom yes and for whom no
Hello balcony observers, city observers (the moon and planets are barely affected by light pollution), travelers who want a maintenance-free viewer, and anyone who primarily observes planets.
Not For wide deep-sky fields, choose a short Newton like the Heritage-130P FlexTube. Long exposure astrophotography belongs to the smart telescopes; lunar photos via the included L-bracket or a smartphone adapter are precisely a strong point of this long focal length.
Featured accessories
These accessories add the most after purchase:
- Moon Filter 25%: the Omegon Moon Filter 25% (1.25 inches) d by the bright moonlight and increases contrast. You can read which filter suits which telescope in our Moon filter guide.
- Smartphone adapter: clamp your phone to the eyepiece and take your own moon photos. The Sky-Watcher SmartPhoto+ adapter comes with a special 20 mm photo eyepiece. For many observers, the most enjoyable accessory of all.
- Carrier bag protects the optics on the way to a dark spot. View the carrier bags and choose the size that fits this model.
