Sky-Watcher Evostar 150ED: the king class among doublets

The Sky-Watcher Evostar 150ED is a 150/1200 mm (f/8) apochromatic refractor with ED glass and matching crown glass: one of the sharpest instruments in the entire range. A six-inch color-pure lens is the size that refractor enthusiasts save up for years, and visually on planets, there's little to beat it in this price range.

Sky-Watcher Evostar 150ED apochromatic refractor

What can you photograph and see with it?

At this focal length, smaller deep-sky objects come within reach: globular clusters, planetary nebulae, and more compact galaxies, in addition to the classic large nebulae. Visually, the image is what an ED refractor is famous for: pitch-black background, needle-sharp stars, and planets without color fringing. These are tubes that seriously serve both worlds.

Six inch apo: the image that matters

With a 150 mm unobstructed aperture and no color fringing, planets appear three-dimensional: fine detail in Jupiter's bands, subtle hues on Saturn, a moon that remains crystal clear at 200x magnification. Photographically, the tube delivers sharp, color-pure stars; expect an EQ6-class mount for the 1200 mm focal length.

This is how to get the most out of this telescope

  • Virtually no cooling time and no collimation: A refractor is ready within fifteen minutes, and the optics stay aligned. More time for photons.
  • The setup determines your photo result: This is a tube for an EQ6-class mount or heavier; you'd be shortchanging this optics on too light a mount.
  • Plan to flatten me: For sharp stars all the way to the corners of your sensor, a field flattener is essential for a photographic refractor. Order it along with your initial purchase to avoid a second waiting period.
  • Dew control is essential with lenses: A dew cap or dew heater prevents the front lens from fogging up in the middle of a session.
  • Visually pleasing as well: A 6 mm eyepiece provides 200x magnification: the planetary registry for which this lens is made.
  • Never look directly at the sun without protection., not even for one photo: only with a certified solar filter in front.

For whom yes and for whom no

Hello the experienced observer or photographer for whom this is the definitive refractor: the instrument for the rest of their observing life.

Not As a first telescope of this caliber, it's a waste of money to learn; If you want astrophotography without the mount learning curve and post-processing, then the smart telescopes the shorter route; ours Telescope Buying Guide for Beginners explain the difference.
