Omegon Ortho 16.8 mm eyepiece (1.25 inch): orthoscopic sharpness for planets

The Omegon Ortho 16.8 mm deliberately opts for the opposite of the wide-angle trend: a classic orthoscopic design with only four lenses, fully focused on maximum sharpness and contrast.

Less glass means less light loss and fewer reflections. For planets, the moon, and double stars, orthoscopic eyepieces therefore often reveal just that little bit more detail than more complex designs in the same price range.

Why orthoscopic surgery works

Four lenses in two groups, each surface multi-layered coated: every transition that can scatter light is one too many, so there are as few as possible. The image is calm, rich in contrast and colour purity, exactly what planet observers are looking for.

The downside is a deliberately compact field of view. Those who want a panorama choose a wide-angle series; those who want detail are well catered for here.

Practical to use

The rubber eye shell keeps stray light out, and the 1.25-inch aperture has filter thread for moon and color filters.

What do you see with a 16.8 mm lens?

At a 130/900 mm focal length, 16.8 mm gives a magnification of 54x, at a 1500 mm focal length 89x. The moon terminator with maximum contrast, and planets at a calm mid-range magnification.

On slow telescopes like Maksutovs, this is a very fixed planet focal point.

Featured accessories

Combine two or three Ortho focal points for a complete planetary set, or use an Omegon Barlow lens to double the range. A moon filter screws directly into the filter thread.

For whom yes and for whom no

  • ✓ Planet, moon and double star observers who achieve sharpness above the field of view
  • ✓ Purists who want to get the maximum contrast out of their telescope
  • ✗ If you are looking for a wide field of view or extra long eye distance: choose the LE Planeten or Redline series
  • ✗ Smart telescopes without interchangeable eyepieces
