If you are satisfied with your Takahashi but find the sharp point difficult to use at high magnification or with a camera, you do not need to replace the entire focus mechanism immediately. With this fine focus mechanism for the Takahashi from Starlight Instruments, you only need to replace the gearwheel with the buttons (the pinion) of the original 2.7-inch rack focus mechanism. This keeps the Takahashi extension tube and provides fine adjustment.
This version (TRF102) is only intended for Takahashi 2.7-inch focusers, so check the size of your focuser. If you’re unsure which solution fits your telescope, check out this page. Our other focusers and upgrades.
Assembly requires some precision, so take your time and work on a clean surface where small parts won't roll off. Then check the result with a Bahtinov or focus mask on a bright star.
If you want to focus electronically later, there is a wireless MicroTouch motor focus which is intended for, among other things, micro pinion sets and the 2.7-inch Micro Feather Touch.
