Anyone who wants to start collecting meteorites often looks for a first piece without immediately going for rare varieties. The Al Haggounia meteorite is suitable for that. It is a stony meteorite from the Western Sahara, of which a large amount of material has been recovered.
This fragment weighs between 0.5 and 0.8 grams. Because it is natural pieces, the shape and exact weight vary from one piece to the next. A meteorite is what remains when a piece of space rock survives the journey through the atmosphere, unlike the dust particles you see as shooting stars like the Perseids.
Hold it with tweezers or gloves and store it dry, because moisture and skin fat are not good for meteorites. A box with a soft mattress will keep it in place.
Al Haggounia is also available in larger sizes, such as the fragment of 0.8 to 1.5 grams and a piece of 7 to 15 grams.
