If you work on the same object over several nights, you want the cutouts to be consistent each time. With a camera rotator for astrophotography, you rotate the camera around the optical axis until the object is exactly in view. You don’t have to unscrew the camera for this, so distance and focus remain constant.
This rotator from Askar has an M54 connection on both sides and a length range of 16 to 20 mm. It fits between your reducer or flattener and the camera. Which objects are suitable for a project over several nights, you can read about in deep-sky objects to observe.
When calculating the backfocus, count the length. Also check if the other components in your image chain have an M54 connection, or if you need an adapter. After rotating, take a short test image to check the cut.
If you have any space left in your backfocus, fill that with the extension bus from 16 to 20 mm.
