Astrocamera guiding and planetary photography 462 mono: monochrome guiding camera with high infrared sensitivity

The GUIDE 462 M uses the Sony IMX462, a sensor that remains sensitive well into the near-infrared. For autoguiding, this provides a clear advantage: red and infrared stars that a regular sensor can barely see are effortlessly used as a guide star by this camera.

With a quantum efficiency of approximately 89 percent, this sensor is among the most sensitive in its class. The exposure time remains short, which means you correct more often and the mount tracks more smoothly.

Sensor and image

The monochrome IMX462 measures 5.6 by 3.1 mm, with a diagonal of 6.4 mm and pixels of 2.9 micrometers. The full resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels at 12 bits.

The full well capacity of 12,700 electrons and the read noise below 2.61 electrons provide a dynamic range of nearly 74 dB. The window transmits light from 380 to 1100 nanometers.

Autoguiding with an ST4 port

The camera has a built-in ST4 port. You connect it directly to the autoguider port of your mount and correct the tracking during long exposures. The sensor also remains usable through a narrowband filter because infrared light is transmitted.

PHD2 recognizes the camera natively. It also works with N.I.N.A., SharpCap, and similar programs via the ASCOM and INDI drivers.

Connect to your telescope

The housing has the shape and diameter of a 1.25-inch eyepiece. So you can slide the camera into almost any focuser. The flange distance is 12.5 mm; with the included extension tube, it becomes 17.5 mm.

The camera has a CS-mount with a 5 mm extension ring that converts the connection to C-mount. The 1.25-inch filter thread is located on the included adapter.

Software and controls

Control is via the free Omegon capture software or via ASCOM and INDI. This allows the camera to work with N.I.N.A., SharpCap, FireCapture, PHD2, and AutoStakkert.

The connection is made via USB 2.0 with a Type-C connector. At full resolution and 8 bits, the camera achieves 18 frames per second.

Included

  • Camera in anodized aluminum housing
  • Adapter with 1.25 inch filter thread (C-mount to M28.5)
  • Extension piece with flange distance 17.5 mm
  • USB cable
  • ST4 cable

Featured accessories

For a complete guiding set, you combine the camera with a Microspeed guidescope. Anyone who also uses the camera for solar photography will need a suitable narrowband filter.
