Artificial city light makes the night sky bright and gray. This broadband filter suppresses the typical wavelengths of street lighting, while allowing light from stars and nebulae to pass through. The background becomes darker, contrast increases, and faint deep-sky objects become visible again.

Particularly from a garden or balcony in the Netherlands and Belgium, where light pollution is the norm, this filter makes the difference between a grey haze and recognizable nebula structure. The effect is visible both to the naked eye and in photographs.
