ZWO ASI 183MC Color: 20 megapixel detail for deep-sky and moon

The ASI183MC brings serious resolution to astrophotography with a color camera: the Sony IMX183 sensor delivers 5496 x 3672 pixels, for a total of 20.18 megapixels. Back-illuminated technology and a quantum efficiency of 84% ensure that even faint nebulae and galaxies are within reach.

The small 2.4-micrometer pixels sample fine detail at short to medium focal lengths. Without active cooling, the camera remains light and ready for immediate use: connect via USB 3.0 and shoot.

Resolution as an asset

With 20 megapixels, you capture large objects such as the Orion Nebula or the crescent moon with room to crop. On fast optics (f/4 to f/6), the small pixels come into their own best.

For the moon and planets, 19 fps at full resolution captures enough frames for stacking; via ROI crops, the speed increases further.

Honest advice about the sensor

The IMX183 is known for visible amp glow during longer exposures. That is not a defect but a sensor characteristic, and completely correctable with dark frames. Anyone who does not want that calibration step should look at a modern glow-free sensor such as the one in the ASI533MC Pro or ASI585MC.

The ST-4 port also allows the camera to be used as a guider if desired.

For whom yes, for whom no

Hello who is looking for maximum resolution per euro and isn't afraid of dark frames.

Not If you want glow-free, low-calibration captures, choose the ASI533MC Pro or ASI585MC.
