Behind an H-alpha filter like the Quark, the field of view is often so large that only part of the sun fits into the frame. The DayStar reducer reduces the field of view by a factor of 0.5x or 0.33x, so you can see a larger part of the sun disk. This is especially useful if you want to take a panoramic photo of the sun with a camera.
You place it behind the filter, in front of the camera or the eyepiece. You connect a camera to the Quark with The T2 adapter for the Quark. You can find other reducers at our reducers for astrophotography.
The amount the reducer reduces depends on the distance between the lens and the camera sensor or eyepiece. With less distance, you get a milder setting; with more distance, a stronger reduction. With strong reduction, vignetting can occur: the edges of the image become darker. Therefore, try the milder setting first. Always use the reducer with a full solar filter setup and never look at the sun without the correct filter.
