TeleVue Plössl 8mm : 50° 1,25″ Oculair: klassiek Ploessl-oculair van TeleVue

The TeleVue Ploessl 8 mm is a classic planetary eyepiece: little glass, high contrast, and a sharp image across the entire field. For lunar and planetary observation, this design is still hard to beat after half a century.

Keep in mind the short eye relief of approximately 6 mm, typical for each Ploessl of this focal length. Those who want more space would be better off combining a 15 or 20 mm with a Barlow.

The TeleVue Ploessl design

Four lenses in two groups are all a good Ploessl needs. Because there are few glass surfaces, transmission remains high and contrast is maximized: precisely the characteristics that matter for planetary and lunar observation.

TeleVue T-type optics brought the design to the current level in the seventies, with tight manufacturing tolerances, multiple coatings, and blackened lens edges. You can see the difference compared to a standard supplied eyepiece right at the edge of the field.

High magnification or Barlow route

An 8mm straight into the focuser and a 15mm with a 2x Barlow give almost the same magnification. The Barlow route gives the longer eye relief of the 15mm as a bonus.

For those who want to work without a Barlow, the 8mm remains the direct path to planetary detail, with the maximum contrast of four glass surfaces.

In your telescope

In a telescope with a 1200 mm focal length, this eyepiece provides approximately 150x magnification with a true field of view of about 0.31 degrees. For your own telescope: true field of view = 57.3 x field stop divided by the telescope's focal length.

The effective field stop of this model is approximately 6.5 mm.

Featured accessories

A TeleVue 2x or 3x Barlow lens doubles or triples the magnification of any Ploessl eyepiece without any loss of quality; two Ploessl eyepieces plus a Barlow lens thus cover four magnification levels. Models 25 mm and larger also accept the Dioptrx astigmatism corrector.
