The large classic refractor telescope on a modern GoTo mount
The Celestron AC 150/1200 Advanced VX is a rarity in today's offerings: a full-fledged 150 mm long-focal-length apochromatic refractor on an equatorial GoTo mount. With 459 times more light than the naked eye and a 1200 mm focal length, this refractor delivers the contrast-rich, calm image that refractor enthusiasts demand: tight star discs, a sharp moon terminator, and fine planetary detail.
Why a large refractor looks different
With no central obstruction, all light goes to the focal point undisturbed: contrast on planets and double stars is unparalleled per millimeter of aperture. At f/8, the achromat's chromatic aberration is limited to a mild zoom around the brightest objects. Realistically usable up to approximately 300x. Consider the length: a 1.2-meter tube requires a sturdy setup location.
The Advanced VX: Built for Photography
The Advanced VX is a German equatorial GoTo mount with a 30 lb payload capacity, NexStar+ hand controller with over 40,000 objects, All-Star Polar Alignment for polar alignment without a view of Polaris, permanent periodic error correction (PPEC), and an autoguider port. The mount operates on 12V; a power tank is the logical addition.
For whom yes, for whom no
Yes: the lover of classic visual observation who values the refractor's image of the Moon, planets, and double stars above all else. No: for those who want to photograph deep-sky objects; color correction and tube length make a Newtonian, EdgeHD, or RASA a better choice for that.
