An equatorial mount only performs when balanced: the counterweight compensates for the weight of the telescope and accessories, allowing the motors to run lightly and evenly. Too little counterweight means wear, tracking errors, and vibrations.
As soon as the camera, guide scope, and filter wheel are mounted on the tube, the included counterweight often slides all the way to the end of the rod. This additional weight of 5.1 kg restores balance and keeps the motors running smoothly: the tracking performance is immediately merkbaar.
