Sky-Watcher Esprit-120ED: aperture and precision

The Sky-Watcher Esprit-120ED is a 120/840 mm (f/7) apochromatic triplet featuring FPL-53 glass. With a 120 mm triplet aperture, smaller galaxies and planetary nebulae come within photographic reach, while the image remains visually crisp even at high magnification. This is the size at which an Esprit takes on a dual function: a top-tier astrograph and a substantial visual refractor.

Sky-Watcher Esprit-120ED apochromatic triplet refractor

Why an Esprit?

The Esprit line is Sky-Watcher's professional astrophotography series: air-spaced triplets with premium glass, built to place flat, color-pure star fields onto a camera sensor. Stars remain points even in the corners, even with large sensors, and bright stars do not develop a purple halo. This is the class where optics make the difference between a nice and a publishable photo.

For the finer purposes

At 840 mm focal length, globular clusters and compact nebulae fill the sensor, and the triplet corrector keeps the stars sharp even on large sensors. The included 2-inch star diagonal and finder allow for immediate visual observation: viewing planets through 120 mm color-corrected glass is an experience in itself.

This is how to get the most out of this telescope

  • Virtually no cooling time and no collimation: A refractor is ready within fifteen minutes, and the optics stay aligned. More time for photons.
  • The setup determines your photo result: an EQ6-class mount is the advice: a 120 mm triplet with camera is a serious load.
  • Plan to flatten me: For sharp stars all the way to the corners of your sensor, a field flattener is essential for a photographic refractor. Order it along with your initial purchase to avoid a second waiting period.
  • Dew control is essential with lenses: A dew cap or dew heater prevents the front lens from fogging up in the middle of a session.
  • Visually pleasing as well: At 140x (with a 6 mm eyepiece), planets appear color-pure and razor-sharp.
  • Never look directly at the sun without protection., not even for one photo: only with a certified solar filter in front.

For whom yes and for whom no

Hello the advanced photographer who wants to target the finer, smaller objects, with visual planetary work as a fully-fledged secondary role.

Not If you want astrophotography without a mount learning curve and post-processing, then the smart telescopes the shorter route; ours Telescope Buying Guide for Beginners explain the difference.

Featured accessories

These accessories add the most after purchase:

  • Camera adapter: The Sky-Watcher M48 adapters connect your Canon EOS or Nikon directly to the flattener or focuser.
  • Light Pollution Filter (2 inch) Under the Dutch or Belgian sky, a light pollution filter can significantly enhance the contrast in your photos.
  • A 6mm planetary eyepiece: the Sky-Watcher 6mm Planetary UWA Eyepiece geeft 140x voor visueel planeetwerk. Wil je nog een stap hoger, dan is er ook de 5 mm versie (168x).
