Impressive visual experience

The ZWO Seestar S50 is equipped with professional triplet apochromatic optics. These high-quality lenses provide razor-sharp images of the night sky with minimal chromatic aberration. The multilayer anti-reflection coating reduces light loss and delivers a bright, high-contrast image, ideal for both observation and astrophotography with this 50 mm smart refractor

Advanced Sony image sensor

Inside the Seestar S50 is the Sony IMX462 STARVIS sensor, specially developed for low-light performance. Thanks to this sensor, you take sharp and low-noise shots even in dark conditions. The sensor can also capture details in the near infrared (IR) spectrum, adding texture and depth to your images. With a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, this is an excellent choice for both novice and advanced astrophotographers.

Live stacking and flexible framing

The Seestar S50 uses live stacking, which automatically combines multiple exposures into one bright, detailed image. The longer you expose, the more color and detail become visible, even of objects invisible to the naked eye. With the built-in SkyAtlas, you can easily rotate or zoom the image frame. The telescope then automatically creates a mosaic image of different sections of the sky and merges them into one perfect panorama.

Autofocus, GoTo and tracking

Using your smartphone's GPS and internal sensors, the telescope automatically performs alignment and calibration. Thanks to the built-in autofocus, your shots will always stay sharp, both for sky objects and landscape photography. Via Auto GoTo, you simply select an object in the app, and the Seestar looks for it itself and tracks it automatically. The tracking compensates for earth's rotation, so the object remains stable in focus without you having to make adjustments.
Seestar S30 easy Telescope.com - Everything for stargazing & nature observation
The Seestar S50 is full of smart features that make photography easier and more accurate. Using the SkyAtlas or smart recommendations, you simply choose a celestial object, then the telescope automatically locates it using plate solving and an internal sky model. The autofocus and tracking function keep your image razor sharp during 10-, 20- or 30-second exposures. For a wider view, you can use the mosaic mode, which automatically merges multiple parts of the sky into one panoramic image.

In short: The Seestar S50 is a clever telescope that makes astrophotography accessible to everyone. You don't need any experience with alignment or focusing: this telescope does it all by itself. Within minutes it is ready to use, and you can see the nebulae, star clusters and galaxies normally visible only with much larger telescopes.

What you can capture with it

  • Nebulae such as Orion and the Veil Nebula
  • Galaxies such as Andromeda and Triangulum
  • Star clusters such as the Pleiades and the Double Cluster
  • The sun with the included solar filter
  • Moving objects in time-lapse or tracking mode

The moon and planets are visible, but not the main purpose of this instrument. The Seestar is fully digital, so there is no eyepiece for visual use.

  1. Rene van Heemskerk -

I have been using the Seestar S50 for over three weeks now and I must say: this thing has really surprised me. I previously had a traditional telescope, but was always spending hours searching and focusing - that has completely disappeared with this one.

Installation actually went surprisingly smoothly. Everything is neatly packaged and feels solid. Within 15 minutes it was outside ready to use. The accompanying app works intuitively: you pair with the telescope via wifi, and then you get a live image directly on your screen. No more fiddling with eyepieces.

What I especially like is the automatic alignment. You just put the telescope down, press ‘start alignment,’ and within a minute it knows exactly where it is and where to go. Then you can just tap on an object in the app (M42 or Saturn, for example), and the telescope turns toward it. And it's actually on top of it - almost always perfectly centered in the image.

The image quality is impressive, especially for such a compact system. I have now captured several deep-sky objects, including the Andromeda Nebula and the Ring Nebula. With the stacking feature, you can really bring out a lot of detail, even from my fairly light-polluted backyard. You won't see Hubble quality, of course, but for a telescope of this size, it's really impressive.

Only small note: you do need to have some patience. It takes a while for the stacking to really produce results, and if you want to shoot some pictures quickly without long exposures, for example, the results are a little less sharp. But if you take your time and let the telescope do its job, you will get great images in return.

The app also has a ‘live stacking’ feature, where your image slowly builds up as you watch. This really gives a wow factor, especially if you're watching with friends or children - you can literally see the nebulae and stars come to life on your screen.

I now use it mostly on a tripod from the garden, but also took it with me on a weekend trip to the Veluwe. Small and light enough to throw in the car.

All in all: I am immensely satisfied. If you're looking for a smart telescope that allows you to explore the sky right away without hassle, the Seestar S50 is the best choice in this price range as far as I'm concerned, will buy the DWARF 3 as well
