The optics of a Dobson are usually better than the mechanics around it. The base plates rotate on plastic pads, and that combination of sliding and weight makes the movement stiff. You push, nothing happens, you push harder and then the telescope overshoots the object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This roller bearing fixes that for a modest amount. You place it between the base plates and the azimuth movement becomes smooth, without having to drill or glue anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What changes at high magnification<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The difference is most noticeable when tracking a planet at 150x magnification or more. Without a bearing, you correct in jerks and frequently lose the object from view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a roller bearing, the corrections are smooth. You push gently and the telescope follows that movement immediately, without sticking first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toolless assembly<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

You loosen the central bolt, lift the rocker box off the base plate, place the bearing around the bolt, and put everything back. That is the whole job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bearing consists of an upper and a lower plate with the rolling elements in between, so the components stay in place by themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outer diameter is 320 mm, the inner diameter is 13 mm and the height is 5 mm. Measure your baseplate before ordering: for a Dobson larger than 12 inches, the L version with 460 mm is the right choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
