Elke refractor levert van nature een licht gebogen beeldvlak; een vlakke camerasensor snijdt daar doorheen, waardoor sterren in de hoeken uitrekken tot streepjes. Een flattener rekent die kromming weg, zodat sterren tot in de hoeken klein en rond blijven.
