The filter is primarily intended for solar observation with a Herschel wedge: the light from a Herschel wedge is already polarized, and by rotating this filter in the eyepiece, you can continuously adjust the brightness to a comfortable level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the filter is useful as a fixed dimming for a bright moon. Note the difference: moonlight is not polarized, so with the moon, the filter dims a fixed percentage, and rotating it does nothing.
