The H-Beta filter focuses on one specific emission line: the hydrogen-beta spectrum around 486 nanometers. That makes it a distinct specialist filter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Objects that would otherwise remain invisible<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A limited number of nebulae strongly emit in H-beta and are barely visible visually without the right filter. Think of the Horsehead Nebula (IC 434) and the California Nebula (NGC 1499). With this filter, they become within reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extremely selective<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The filter blocks almost all other wavelengths, including light pollution, moonlight, and wide portions of the visible spectrum. This allows you to view a very dark image in which only the hydrogen light passes through. That requires a large aperture and a dark observing location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
