It is a flat model of the sky. With the rotating star chart, the reticule, and the scale divisions, you can find out which stars are above the horizon at a given time, when the sun rises and sets, or what time it is based on the sun’s or a star’s height.

This is the medium-sized version of the modern astrolabe from Hemisferium. If you want a larger size, there is also The large version of this astrolabe.

It is a decorative piece and at the same time an instrument to practice with. Take the time to read it, because working with an astrolabium requires some explanation and patience. A book in Dutch like Enjoying the starry sky by Rob Walrecht helps to get to know the starry sky.
