The difference lies in the blocking filter, and that difference determines what this version is intended for: H-alpha solar photography.

Why the block filter matters

The block filter is located just before the eyepiece and determines how much of the field of view is unobstructed. The B1200 has 12 mm of free aperture compared to 5 mm for the B500. For visual use, this means a brighter edge area; for photography, it means a camera sensor can capture the full solar disk without vignetting. Those who wish to point a planetary camera or small astro camera at the sun should therefore choose this version.

Complete and portable

The B1200 version is also a complete telescope weighing 1.2 kg: tripod thread, Sol-Searcher solar finder, and helical focuser. You set it up on a photo tripod, find the sun using the Sol-Searcher's projection screen, and tune to the H-alpha line with tilt-tuning. Prominences, filaments, and active regions appear immediately in the field of view.

In the box

LS40THa solar telescope

B1200 block filter in zenith mirror housing

Sol-Searcher

Prismarail (GP)

Manual

Specifications

Feature

Value

Optics

2-lens refractor, no obstruction

Opening

40 mm

Focal length

400 mm (f/10)

Bandwidth

less than 0.7 Angstroms

Alignment

Mechanical tilt tuning

Blockfilter

B1200 (12 mm clearance), 1.25 inch

Focuser

Helical

Ocula Connection

1.25 inches (31.7 mm)

Angle resolution

3.45 arcseconds

Weight

2.65 lbs

An H-alpha solar telescope is safe for solar observation due to its closed filter system.
