The tube is an open truss construction: for transport and storage it folds out and is almost a third shorter, and during viewing there is a fabric cover over the truss. It stands on a wooden base that you can adjust manually, with an 8×40 optical viewfinder, a fine-adjustment focus ring, and a fan behind the main mirror. The New Skyline series from Levenhuk also includes the same mirror in a fixed tube; other models with a retractable tube are available here. collapsible Dobsons.

What do you see with the Skyline PRO 10 Retractable?

From a dark spot: spiral structure in the Whirlpool Galaxy M51, the cigar-shaped M82 system with a dark lane across the center next to the round M81, and a dust lane along the core of the Andromeda Nebula; the entire system is larger than the image. With an UHC filter, the arcs of the Pleiades Nebula are visible as thin, twisted filaments. Hollows like M13 are broken up into loose stars in the core, the Ring Nebula M57 is a ring with a dark center and the Halley Nebula M27 shows its sand-like shape. The Orion Nebula extends around the four stars of the Trapezium, and the Pleiades fill up to 51x the entire image. Moon: at 51x the full moon, at 127x craters, mountain chains and the shadow line, and at 212x with a 6 mm eyepiece the small craters at the bottom of the large ones. Jupiter: cloud bands with color variation and small knots, the Great Red Spot and the shadow of a moon during a transit. Saturn: the Cassini division as a dark line in the ring and several smaller moons next to Titan. Nebulae and systems are seen with the eye in gray tones, not in color. From a city or village with streetlights, the moon, planets, double stars, and star clusters remain; nebulae and systems require a dark spot. The highest meaningful magnification is approximately 500x; due to the air above the Netherlands and Belgium, the limit in practice is between 200 and 250x. From the age of 8, together with an adult; from the age of 12, independently. An adult can build the structure and place the tube weighing 17.5 kg in the foot; a child can then set it up and focus it on their own.

Can I take photos with it? Yes, short shots of the moon and planets with a phone using a smartphone adapter on the eyepiece; at 51x with the 25 mm eyepiece, the entire moon fits on the photo. A Dobson does not follow the sky, so for long exposures of clouds, a different mounting is needed.

Which solar filter fits it? A foil filter that is attached to the top of the tube beforehand. The manufacturer specifies a tube diameter of 31 cm; measure the circumference of the upper ring, divide by 3.14 and choose the sun filters a Baader ASTF whose clamping range covers that size (the ASTF 280 clamps at 310 to 340 mm). Check the film before each use, cover the viewfinder, and never use an eclipse filter behind the viewfinder or a filter in the eyepiece.

Do I need to collimate it after assembly? Check it every time; according to the manufacturer, the precision holds the alignment between sessions. With a Cheshire, that’s a short check; the steps are listed in the Collimation guide.

What is the fan for? It brings the main mirror to room temperature faster, so warm air above the mirror does not cause the image to shake. It runs on 8 AA batteries; turn it on as soon as the telescope is outside.

Can it fit in a car? The tube is approximately 80 cm long and 31 cm thick; with the foot measuring 60 x 60 cm, that fits in the trunk of a medium-sized car or partially in the backseat.

Specifications

Specification

Value

Optical design

Newton reflector, parabolic main mirror, open hollow-section tube

Opening

254 millimeters (10 inches)

Focal length

1270 mm

Opening ratio

f/5

Mirror

BK-7 with aluminum coating, 92 to 95% reflectivity; flat catch mirror 64 mm

Highest meaningful magnification

about 500x, in practice 200 to 250x

Mount

Dobson, floor model, wooden base, manual

Reporter

2 inch gear rack with two speeds and 1.25 inch adapter

Seeker

8×40 optical

Included eyepieces

Plössl 25 mm (51x) and 10 mm (127x), 1.25 inch

Ventilator and light cover

Fan behind the head mirror (8 AA batteries, not included); dust cover

Total weight

30.5 kg (tube 17.5 kg, foot 13 kg)

Tube length

118 cm in length, diameter 31 cm; for transport it is almost a third shorter

Foot

60 x 60 cm, 52.5 cm high

Packed

84 x 69 x 48 cm

Shipping and assistance

Orders with multiple items are shipped from multiple warehouses and may arrive in parts; each package will have its own tracking number.
