Every year around mid-December, hundreds of shooting stars light up the sky, and tonight, on <strong>December 13<\/strong>, this impressive swarm reaches its peak. It is the time to have your telescope, warm clothes and a good dose of wonder at hand. In this blog post you will discover everything you need to know about this extraordinary celestial phenomenon and how best to enjoy this cosmic spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the Geminids?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Geminids are an annual meteor swarm created when Earth passes through a trail of space debris left behind by the mysterious asteroid <strong>3200 Phaethon<\/strong>. Unlike most meteor swarms, which originate from comets, the Geminids are unique in that their origin is an asteroid. This makes the Geminids' particles more solid and makes them brighter and more colorful when they enter our atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name \u2018Geminids\u2019 comes from the constellation <strong>Gemini (Gemini)<\/strong>, where the meteors seem to start. This point is called the radiant, and although it appears that the meteors come from there, you can see them anywhere in the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When and how can you see them?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The peak of the Geminids is tonight, <strong>December 13<\/strong>, and in the early hours of Dec. 14. This year promises to be a spectacular sight, with a peak of as much as <strong>120 meteors per hour<\/strong> under ideal conditions. Here are some tips to get the most out of your observations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Time<\/strong>: The best time to see the Geminids is between midnight and sunrise, when the radiant in the constellation Gemini is high in the sky.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Find a dark place away from city lights. The less light pollution, the more meteors you can see.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weather forecast<\/strong>: Check that the sky is clear. A cloudless night is essential.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Equipment<\/strong>: Although you don't need a telescope to see meteors, binoculars or a wide-field telescope can help you see slow meteors and their colorful tracks in detail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why are the Geminids so special?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What distinguishes the Geminids from other meteor swarms, such as the Perseids in August, is their brightness and reliability. They are often <strong>brighter than most shooting stars<\/strong>, with an array of colors ranging from white and yellow to green and blue. In addition, they move relatively slowly (about 35 km\/s), giving you more time to admire them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year's show will be extra special because the moon is in a favorable phase.
